Help Edie - Update

In March 2016 the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge was contacted by Sharon and Jason Browne. Their youngest daughter Edie, who was five, was born with a rare chromosome abnormality which resulted in needing open heart surgery, learning difficulties, spinal and joint problems and suffered from seizures. She was non verbal and solely tube fed for 3 years. Also she was unable to walk. However despite her problems Edie was the most happy, joyful and determined  little girl you could wish to meet. She is a very big part of the community and is loved by all that meet her.

Sharon and Jason asked if the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge would help towards the purchase of a Hart Walker (http://www.hartwalkeruk.com/). This is a device which assists young people with mobility difficulties. They felt that this unit would give her the ability to walk and play with her siblings age 8 and 9.

When proposed to the Rotary Club the response was unanimous, that we should help with the purchase of the Walker. So with contributions from the local community, Chew Stoke Film Club and the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge, in April, the Walker was ordered and it was delivered in May 2016.

Edie took to the Walker straight away. Her ability to move when and where she choose was a real thrill for her. Over the passed year she has used the unit on an almost daily basis. However what was never expected was that in February this year she stunned everyone by taking some independent unaided steps.

This week, last years President of the Rotary Club, Spike Parker, was very kindly invited to visit Sharon, Jason and Edie to see for himself the progress that has been made. As the photographs show, Edie does not take just a few steps but is able to walk short distances, unaided.

The Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge is so pleased to have been give the opportunity to help Edie and we all wish her well, in the certainty that she will continue to amaze us all with her progress.

Spike Parker.

Past President. (2015-2016).
