What is Rotary?
AN INTRODUCTION TO ROTARY
Rotary International is a global network of service volunteers. It is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people, with some 1,210,905 members operating in 168 countries world-wide.
There are some 55,000 Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland in 1,800 clubs, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. Its a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow.
But there is much more. Clubs meet on a regular basis, which allows members to build firm friendships. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting anywhere in the world, so there is always somewhere to go, and people to meet, wherever business or leisure travel may take you.
MONMOUTH ROTARY CLUB
In the Rotary year ending 30th June 2010, the Monmouth Club donated almost £48000 to charity. Principally to St Davids Foundation Hospice Care, In The Pink breast cancer research, Cross Roads Wales, Monmouth People First, Shelter boxes, Bridges Community Centre, Tenovus, Barnardos, Macmillan Nurses and Wales Air Ambulance but also to many other smaller charities.
The main fund raising events for the Monmouth Club are The Lower Wye Valley Walk, The Raft Race, Harvest festival auction, Bonfire Night, Christmas Sleigh and Street Collections.
In the 2010 / 2011 year, commencing 1st July, the Monmouth Club is planning to run the same fund raising events, with St David's Foundation Hospice Care and In The Pink breast cancer research being the main beneficaries, whilst generous contributions will be made to other charitable organisations. In addition a new event will be introduced on 1st August; a kite festival and balloon glow with free parking and entry.
The Club will support various youth initiatives, (Youth Speaks, RYLA and Young Chef) and will also continue to give support and guidance to the Monmouth People First group. This is a volunteer group which has been established in Monmouth to help young adults with learning difficulties.
