Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Brynmawr

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Brynmawr.

The Rotary Club of Brynmawr is one of three Rotary Clubs in Blaenau Gwent. We are a young minded club with a mixed gender balance . Our members range from 35-80+.

We were founded in 1968 and are pleased to be celebrating our 45th year of service to the Brynmawr community.

What do we do?

We undertake service in our community whenever there is a request or a need and as well as that we donate between £3,000-£5,000 each year to our charitable causes, money which we raise ourselves with great enjoyment and team spirit. Some of our main fundraising ventures at the moment are our The Grand National Draw, raffles and Christmas fundraisers.

Where do we spend monies raised?

Our Youth and Community project for 2010-13 is Literacy and we annually present all year 6 leavers from local schools in our catchment area within Brynmawr and Nantyglo with a wonderful Dictionary - the Dictionary 4 Life - which will help them with their work in secondary education -  the 2011 and 2012 dictionaries were presented thanks to a legacy from past Rotarian Rtn Gwyn Bevan PHF and the 2013 dictionaries will be presented gratefully from donations given in lieu of flowers at the funeral of founder member Rtn Cyril Williams PHF. This giving is a lasting tribute to the commitment the two Rotarians made to the community and Rotary locally.

Where possible and when asked, we get involved locally assisting when and where we can.  We recently assisted locally; The Otters Swimming Club with a donation to help them continue the wonderful work they do, we have purchased a new kit for the Beaufort Colts Football Club and have committed to helping them get warm outdoor clothes in 2013, The Brynmawr Under 15's Cricket club have received equipment, we made a financial donation to Hafan Cymru, supported the Brynmawr Arts and Crafts society and given food to The Blaenau Gwent Food Bank, as well as supporting awards at local schools and youth groups.

With younger people within the New Generations Youth Opportunity programmes we take part in Youth Speaks, Young Musician, Young Chef and other such opportunities.

For young people we actively promote the Rotary Foundation's worldwide eradication of Polio Programme and the Rotary Foundations educational programmes - Ambassadorial Scholarships and Group Study Exchanges.

Internationally we support many projects: LifeStraw- our clubs own charity which you can find out more at :www.lifestraw.org.uk

At Christmas we committed to feeding and educating 20 children via Marys Meals and we sent 19 filled backpacks to the Marys Meals Back pack scheme, we support regularly The Rotary Doctor Bank, Jaipur Limb and the Rotary Shelter Box Trust which flies in immediate shelter and equipment wherever disaster strikes within days.

We also actively collect used spectacles to have them refurnished and sent to third world countries - Your unwanted spectacles can be dropped into Donna at Kutz N Kurlz...

Why not join us?

If you enjoy helping your local community and would like to be part of an organisation that has 1.2 million members in over 200 countries worldwide, and have fun as well, why not come along and see how we work as well as have fun and make new friends.

Where do we meet?

We meet in the The Talisman Public House on Brynmawr Market Square. As Brynmawr is situated at the Highest point of the Heads of the Valleys we believe we truly have reached the highest level within Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland.

We meet every Tuesday, to enjoy good company and to discuss and plan our community service and charitable work. We meet at lunchtimes and evenings, alternating between each to enable those working to attend meetings as we understand the difficulties in today's' society to commit to meeting times. Lunchtime meetings start at 1pm and evenings at 7pm, we eat first and enjoy socialising with each other before moving onto the business in hand. Lunchtimes we only take an hour as we have to get back to our workplaces, but evenings are more leisurely.

New member enquiries are always welcome, Contact us via the email link for more information.
