Wed Apr 13th 2011

On 13th April our speaker was Rebecca McMurray who is the Events and Community Fundraising Executive at RNID. Rebecca’s background was in social geography and classical music. She spent 10 years at the Chetham School of Music in Manchester and it was this love of music that took her first into volunteering for RNID and then to working for them.

Rebecca now works with people in their local community to improve public awareness of deafness and hearing protection and to raise funds for research into hearing aid technology, tinnitus, and cochlea implants.

RNID would also like to raise money for research into a possible cure for deafness. She told us that 1 in 7 people have some hearing loss but this becomes 1 in 2 after 60.

Many people do not know of the help available. “Hear to Help”, based in Aylesbury, covers the whole of Bucks supporting hearing aid users with advice on flashing door bells, vibrating alarms and checking their hearing aids every 6 months.
