Rotary Project-Focus on the Crocus

On Sunday morning members of Penrith Rotary Club planted 5000 purple crocus bulbs along the grass central reservation on Ullswater Road near the mini roundabout at Haweswater Road.

Rotary Clubs in Great Britain are  planting purple crocus bulbs so they will be in flower for Rotary Day – 23 February 2011. The purple flowers will represent the colour of ink dabbed on a child's little finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio. Rotary across the world is determined to help rid the world of polio and works with the Bill Gates Foundation and others to accomplish this.

Rotary Clubs in the UK have bought over 5 million bulbs to make this the world's largest bulb plant in support of any global cause.

Malcolm Boyd, Rotary President thanked the local Highways Authority for their permission and for ensuring the safety of Rotarians as they worked in the middle of the road.
