Club activities organised for young people

To make or give opportunities for the Youth of our area.

Provide the opportunity for less privileged children to attend a local pantomime.

Each December we organise a carol concert for the local Primary Schools. This has proved to be very successful with several schools participating. In the past the Burgess Hill Community Festival Committee has sponsored the Martlets Hall and this has been filled to capacity each year. A wonderful experience for 6 to 11 year olds to sing in front of an audience of over 300 people.

Youth Speaks is a Rotary public speaking competition for 11 to 16 year old students who are required to address an audience and speak for 5 minutes on their chosen subject before being judged on their performance. There are three in a team - a Speaker, a Chairperson who introduces the speaker and, finally, a vote of thanks is given by a third member of the team. A first round is held at one of the local schools/colleges and the winning team then progresses to the district final. If successful, the team will have the opportunity to participate in subsequent rounds and, hopefully, the national final. It gives the students tremendous experience and confidence (read more...)

The Club supports the Rotary Youth Exchange programme which gives young people the opportunity to stay with a family in another country to experience and foster greater understanding and tolerance of other cultures and creeds (read more...)

Each year thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program world wide. Young people in the 18-30 age range are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all expenses-paid seminar, camp or workshop.

RYLA aims to: -

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth.

  • Provide an effective training experience for selected young people.

  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth and recognise publicly young people who are rendering services to their communities.

This year we sponsored a young lady who gained much in confidence and leadership skills.

These competitions are run  for students of local Primary Schools. Certificates and prizes are awarded to the winners of each year group, best in school and the best overall of all schools.

The winning entries are exhibited in the foyer of the Martlets Hall in Burgess Hill during the Town Festival Week (read more...)
