Report on Penrith Rotary 2012 Swimathon
Penrith Rotary Swimathon – event goes from strength to strength.
This year’s annual Penrith Rotary Swimathon once again looks set to break records.
It started with last Saturday evening and will culminate on Saturday 4th February.
The event in its ninth year is as always taking place at Penrith Leisure Centre pool where we are, I hope, now becoming old and valued customers. The service seems to indicate that this is the case anyway.
This year demand has once again been high so we have had to add an extra hour on each evening, an increase in time of 50%.
This year there are over 50 teams taking part, a new record once again. The teams, as always, represent a wide cross section of people, schools and community groups from across the Eden Valley.
Last year’s record of 196 lengths swum in 50 minutes, set by a team from Arragon’s Triathlon Club, still stands.
Let’s not get carried away with the competitive aspect of the event though. Remember it is not really about winning but taking part, having fun, and raising money for our clubs, teams and schools and also to help others who are less fortunate. From the athletes breaking the records to the five year olds who can just about make a length unaided, everyone’s a winner. Many worthwhile charities, clubs and community groups benefit, and the participants have a great time while also raising money.
The teams between them collected around £7000 for their various charities. It’s win-win for Penrith Rotary too, we raise some funds to redistribute to our preferred charities while also providing, what we think, is a brilliant community event.
