A report on the lunch time speaker.

Dr P Carter accepting a cheque from President Nigel.

Wednesday 6th June.

This week the lunchtime speaker was Dr Pip Carter. Pip has worked for many years for the Waltham Windmill preservation society but this week he was taking about not only wind mills but also water mills. The talk was illustrated with slides.

He began his talk with slides of Victoria Mill in Grimsby. This was opened in in 1906  this and many other buildings caused the demise of the wind and water mills that were grinding corn. The new mills used steam power, roller mills and the flour could be moved by rail. The country was importing cheap corn.Sadly many wind and ware mills closed.

Waltham windmill was built in 1879 and is typical with a brick base coated in tar and a white cap.The mill at Woralby is a post mill and has to be turned manually into the wind. These were replaced by the brick type.

Pip showed us many other windmill throughout Lincolnshire. Many in varying states of disrepair.

At the end of the talk Pip was presented with a cheque as a contribution to the funds.
