Swanage Rotary Supports Swanage Carnival

Sun, Jul 29th 2012 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Swanage Rotary were voted as first in the Carnival Procession with their (Un) Synchronised Swimming float. Celebrating the carnival theme of "Going For Gold" the local Rotary Club proved to be popular with the public as well as the judges.

The weather was kind to Swanage on the opening day of the Carnival and provided a wonderful backdrop to a great day.

The Red Arrows performed an emtional display following their well publicised problems of 2011. In their new configuration of seven Hawk jets the crowds were entranced by the precision and daring of their display. What a great way to start the day!

The theme for the Carnival was "Going For Gold" - not surprisingly with the activity going on in Weymouth. Many local organisations responded with their floats supporting the theme - Swanage Rotary were no different.

Artistic Director Sue Whitton was pleased that her concept had been brought to life in such a fun way. "I spoke to Danny Boyle a few months ago" said Sue. "He told me that he was keeping Steve Redgrave for the opening ceremony so we had to switch to plan B and the (Un) Synchronised Swimming".

After extensive auditions a team of 8 rotarians were selected (in their absence) and along with Coach Mo. Andrews worked out the award winning routine. "Some of the original moved had to be modified" said Mo. "Trying to throw each other about on the back of a moving tractor proved too much after we nearly lost someone onto the beach when we hit a bump".

However, when the heat was on the troop performed a flawless(!) routine for the judges who were clearly impressed.

A great time was had by all in Swanage as Carnival week was kicked-off in fine style. Hopefully lots will be collected for charity again this year so congratulations to the organising committee for all their efforts.
