The Rotary Club of Edinburgh held a gala dinner in the Balmoral Hotel on 21st September 2012 to celebrate its Centenary.
More than 250 Rotarians and guests met for a sparkling reception, which was an excellent time for acquaintances to be renewed.
The President of the Rotary Club of Edinburgh, Bob Hislop, welcomed everyone to this 'once in a lifetime' event. He read out letters of greetings from Rotary International President, Sakuji Tanaka and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who is the Club's longest serving Honorary Member.
Among the Civic and Rotary guests were the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh the Rt Hon Donald Wlson, Rt Hon Sir Malcolm Rifkind, Past President of Rotary International John Kenny, Past Rotary International Director Gordon McInally, President of Rotary International in Britain and Ireland John Minhinick, District 1020 Governor John Barbour, President of the Rotary Club of London Norman Winbourne and President of the Rotary Club of Glasgow Judith Tatham.
Representatives from overseas Rotary Clubs of Oakland No 3, Washington D.C., Matilda Bay, Perth, WA and Fiesole, Italy and two Ambassadorial Scholars attended as well as representatives of 30 UK Rotary Clubs and their guests.
A delicious dinner of the best of Scottish fare was enjoyed in sumptious surroundings followed by excellent speeches: The Centenary (Gordon McInally), The Club (Sir Malcolm Rifkind) with Reply on behalf of the RC of Edinburgh (PP Graeme Forbes). Following a short musical interlude of Scottish songs led by Edinburgh member Ross Hunter, the final speaker Willie Hunter rounded off the dinner with hilarious repartee in thanking the Club on behalf of the guests.
Proposing the final toast to Rotary International, the Presidednt thanked all who had made the evening so successful, in particular PP Judith Sischy who had led the small organising team.
