Chief Officer of the States of Jersey Police
Mike Bowron began his post as Chief Officer in January 2011.
Before joining the States of Jersey Police, Mike served as Commissioner of the City of London Police for 5 years, and before that as Assistant Commissioner for 4 years.
Mike is the Association of Chief Police Officers' (ACPO) national lead for business continuity, and is also chairman of Police Sport (UK) athletics section.
Career and training history
Mike joined the Sussex Police in 1980 after 4 years as a broker with insurance firm Lloyd's.
He rose to the rank of Chief Superintendent in Sussex before transferring to Kent as Assistant Chief Constable in 1997, where he served for 5 years.
Mike has served on 2 overseas postings, firstly in the Czech Republic following the Velvet Revolution and again in 2000 in Indonesia where he was tasked with separating the National Police from the Indonesian Army. He also enjoyed a posting to New Scotland Yard where he was the ACPO advisor and head of the European Policy Analysis Unit.
In 1995 Mike attended the strategic command course at the Police Staff College, Bramshill. He is also a graduate of its special course. He holds an upper second honours degree in sociology from Sussex University.
In 2007 he graduated from the FBI National Executive Programme and in the same year was appointed a Commissioner of Lieutenancy for the City of London.
Awards and special interests
Mike was awarded the Queen's Police Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honour List in 2007, and in November 2008 received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from City University. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Mike's passion outside policing is athletics. He has represented the British Police cross-country team and has run a sub 3-hour marathon.
