Charles Parkinson, former Treasury & Resources Minister in the States of Guernsey, has a passion for history.
In his recent book, 'Lisia', he tells the extraordinary story of Guernsey and the other Channel Islands, in the north-western Europe of antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
The Channel Islands were places of religious significance to the Celtic people of pre-Roman Gaul, and they contain literally hundreds of stone monuments and tombs dating back to 4500BC. But more than that, they were vital links on the trade routes between Britain and the Mediterranean, and they operated important commodity exchanges from the 2nd millennium BC until the Roman era.
In both their religious and commercial roles, they were known to the ancient Greeks, and in the Roman Empire, Jersey became a centre for offshore banking.
