Club Meeting with Guest Speaker

President Scott Elliot welcomed a good turnout of members at last week's meeting of the Rotary Club to hear a most interesting talk by the speaker Stuart Fish, who was making his debut as a public speaker.  His talk was entitled "the 4 crows - bushcraft and primitive living skills."  Stuart has had a lifelong interest in how our ancestors of the stone-age and cavemen era survived in the most spartan and extreme environments and had to start from scratch.  He explained how fire was discovered by rubbing two pieces of wood together and how the hunter/gatherer peoples survived and how they made their tools and shelters.  He had made and experimented with their primitive tools and found that they worked.  He showed many examples of fishing hooks and tackle he had made based on archaeological finds and they were of a quality that the ancient ancestors would have approved.  He had a wide range of implements on display all made by him from natural materials.  The arrows with bone and flint tips were exquisitely made and utensil bowls made from the treated roots of the spruce tree were of the highest quality.  All that was required was concentration, engenuity and patience, all attributes that the ancient peoples possessed brought about by necessity for survival.  Stuart tests himself to the limit and takes himself off to the woods and wild places, especially in winter, and has to find everything to survive by his own efforts.  He has studied plants, fruits and berries to supplement his subsistence which are all part of bushcraft skills.  There is a growing interest world-wide for bushcraft and, indeed, TV programmes portray this to promote awareness and respect for nature and teach survival skills.  He organises outings for like-minded individuals and hopes to build up a business offering his services and expertise to firms who promote team-building, bonding and confidence skills.  His talk prompted many questions after which Andrew Suddon gave the vote of thanks and said they were all in awe of his skills.
Stuart then made the draw for the Rotary Grocery Prize  the winners being:-
