NEW ROTARIAN LEARNS THE ROPES

Whenever Rotary clubs induct a new member, it is not long before he or she is asked to provide a “job talk” or some kind of introductory account of his or her life, so that other members can become acquainted with the background.

At the club’s meeting on Tuesday however, Vivienne Quant, inducted just before Christmas, told of how she and President Roger Sayer had attended a district-wide evening meeting for new Rotarians at Stokenchurch recently.

Mrs Quant said how she had been welcomed by everyone at the event, where there were about 40 new members from District 1090, which covers about 60 clubs in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, parts of Buckinghamshire and Middlesex. She learnt about the international activities of the Rotary movement, particularly its involvement in eradicating polio, as well as the different initiatives being used to promote Rotary in this district. The new club of Maidenhead Bridge is being formed and they meet at a coffee shop on Sunday mornings, quite often with the families coming along.

She emphasised how well she had been received by the Henley club.

President Roger Sayer thanked her for her talk and then went on to say how he and his wife Lynn had attended the final night of the Henley Youth Festival, something for which the club is a sponsor. In the past the club used to run the “Young Musician” competition, part of the festival.
