Local member gives talk


President Scott Elliot welcomed members to last week's meeting of the Rotary Club and introduced club member Ron Smith to give a talk on the "History of Politics in Hawick."  Ron had researched the subject for a chapter in a forthcoming book on Hawick which will include all aspects of life in the town.  In a deep ranging look at politics, which he delivered in an interesting style, he went back many centuries and showed how things had evolved until the present day.  In 1812, there were 143 electors in Roxburghshire and only 3 in Hawick so control of the masses was in the hands of a few. From 1832, only land owners. or tenants paying over
