Local member gives talk.

President Scott Elliot welcomed a guest with an usual story to tell at last week's meeting.  Livia Siripom, of Thailand but now living in Munich was Billy McWatters' guest.  Billy met her father Preecha Siripom in Thailand in 1988 when he had a party of Duke of Edinburgh Award students there and formed a friendship.  Later he, Preecha, married a Garman lady and had a family of a son and daughter Livia.  The marriage later broke up and Livia became estranged from her father and brother.  It was due to an article and photograph in the Hawick News of Billy's friendship with Preecha and, thanks to the power of the internet, Livia discovered this and contacted Billy who was able to put her in touch with her father and she has since met him.  Livia, now in her 20's, gave an excellent address to the club and thanked Billy for all that he had done for her and how much she was enjoying her first visit to Hawick.

The speaker. Kerr Scott, talked of his career in the police traffic department.  Kerr was a "crack" police driver and was an advanced grade 1 instructor, the top position, at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan.  He explained how officers are selected and trained.  The screening process is extremely diligent and only the best become traffic drivers and there is a high failure rate on the course.  As well as the theoretical aspect the actual driving is most important and, as all training and test drives are carried out on public roads, it is at times a dangerous pastime and driving through Glencoe in a 'souped-up' Jaguar at 140 mph+ can be an unnerving experience especially for the passengers not to mention the driver.  Kerr explained all aspects of the course which engendered many interesting questions on driving and law enforcement after which Andrew Suddon gave the vote of thanks.
