Speaker Meeting

Jenny Eastwood, recently appointed editor of the Citizen, was our guest speaker.
Having the unenviable task of keeping us from our meal, it was one of those evenings we occasionally experience when we have to compete with the Kingsholm tannoy system, Jenny unveiled her vision for the future of this venerable local mouthpiece. Who could not be taken along by her enthusiasm for rebranding, and for relaunching a modern Monday version of the old Pink Un sports supplement?
Jenny regaled us of her meteoric rise through the ranks of journalism to editorship at such a relatively tender age. Clearly, her career is destined for even greater things, so we do well to savour her sojourn whilst it lasts.
The measure of any good speaker is in the quantity and quality of the questions which ensued following her succinct, and all the better for it, presentation. In this we were not disappointed as these ranged from the robust challenges of our resident local politician to the more searching probes about editorial policy, even veering into her thoughts on the sartorial extravagances of her illustrious predecessor and clearly much admired mentor.
An evening which eloquently demonstrated that the word can, indeed was, equal to the pen.

Rotary@Kingsholm has discovered that Gloucester City as only 3 accessible defibrillators. This is the lowest number in the country. A new defibrillator costs about £2200. Our aim during the next 12 months is to raise enough money to double that number.

Longfield Hospice provides end of life support at home to reduce the demand on NHS beds. Recognising how It is vital that the hospice continues its work to help vulnerable people in need, we were happy to make a donation to their funds.
