Vice-President Sandy Bannerman was in the chair at last week's meeting of the Rotary Club in the absence of President Scott Elliot when they were honoured by the presence of the High School's Head Boy Hamish Marshall and Head Girl Kristie Waugh as the guest speakers. Both gave excellent, polished dissertations on their schooldays at the High School to date where both are in their Sixth year and awaiting places at University to continue their education.
Kristie, a former pupil of Denholm Primary School, found the move-up to the High School rather daunting but, by her personal application and endeavour, had settled in to a successful period of her life. As well as the educational aspects she shone at sport, especially swimming, where she reached the national finals. She found the extra-curricular activities very rewarding and went on school trips to the Battlefields, Normandy, a jungle experience in Brunei and also went with the school to Sierra Leone which was a real eye-opener. Her plan at present is to study geography and teach the subject.
Hamish, a former pupil of Wilton Primary School, followed an older brother up to the High School. He also found the step-up rather trying but soon settled in to the 'big school' and found, to his relief, that the supposed "rites of admission" turned out to be scare-mongering after all! He has had a successful six year's of study and is looking forward to his further education. He also undertook school trips which he found excellent character-building experiences. His non-academic interests lay in music which he found very enjoyable and he has applied this in being a member of the Saxhorn Band in the town. Questions from members followed and Ron Sutherland gave the vote of thanks. He complimented them on their mature, confident talks and wished them good fortune in their future studies.
