The members of Duns Rotary Club were pleased to welcome two pairs of guest speakers at their meeting last Thursday.
Firstly they welcomed the District Governor of District 1020, Alistair Marquis and his wife Margaret. Rotary District 1020 covers the south of Scotland from coast to coast and from the Forth to the Border, and has 1,700 members in 60 local Rotary Clubs. District Governor Alistair encouraged the club in their excellent Friendship and Fellowship, and expanded on this years Rotary International theme Light up Rotary. He suggested the theme should be an encouragement to:
1. Shine a light on Rotary (tell others about Rotary)
2. Lighten up Rotary (have fun in what we do)
3. En-lighten yourself on Rotary (learn more about this international organisation)
4. Delight in Rotary (take pride in the organisation)
Then Bridie Ashrown and Steve Wright from YouthBorders took the floor and gave an excellent presentation on the work of their organisation. Bridie is the manager of YouthBorders, and she introduced the members to the impressive range of activities which she and her team run. Their aim is to create and support alternative environments where young people can thrive in the Scottish Borders, through a network of non-uniformed youth groups.
Steve is the Manager of Connect Berwickshire Youth Project, and he shared an encouraging account of the courses, events, training and expeditions which YouthBorders provide more locally, which contribute to ensuring that quality training is available for all staff and volunteers and that the youth groups of Berwickshire
