Hearing Dogs For The Deaf - An Overview of the Charity
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and public buildings
Nearly 10 million people in the UK experience some degree of hearing loss. That's one person in every six. Over half a million are severely or profoundly deaf. The charity wants to help as many of these people as possible by creating life-changing partnerships between deaf people and specially trained hearing dogs.
Due to the successful partnerships right across the UK, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People adopts over 200 puppies a year to meet the growing demand for hearing dogs.
The Charity has its own Breeding Scheme and adopts puppies from breeders. It also adopt puppies from rescue centres as and when suitable recruits are identified. The key factors in our selection criteria is the breed, age and personality of the puppy
Typically they train Labradors, Golden Retrievers, English Cocker Spaniels and Miniature Poodles. They also train a small number of Labrador crosses and Cocker crosses alongside these breeds in order to ensure they have the right dog to match each and all of our applicants.
Puppies are placed in family homes with volunteer puppy socialisers from around eight weeks through to around 12-14 months of age, at which time they return to one of the two Training Centres to begin their soundwork training with our experienced dog training staff.
Towards the end of the four months of soundwork training, the dog is matched to a suitable recipient and they then train together for a week at one of our Training Centres before embarking on a life-changing partnership together.
Please support the charity via Keith Burnett with the collection of used Stamps, used Ink Jet Cartridges and old Mobile Phones.
