A new chairman was appointed last year, who has carried out a full review of the care required for children with life threatening illnesses. The cost of full time 24 hour nursing care was prohibitive, but a survey of needs revealed that in most cases that was not what parents wanted for their children.
As a result, children will be coming to the hospice, probably starting in May, for short break or respite care, to give their minders a rest. There will still, in due course, be the option of full end of life care, but this will be funded in a different way through the social service budget via the local authority.
Full details of the plans as they move forward cn be found on the hospice website at www.gracehouse.co.uk
