Billy McWatters: Rory Powell - A Ranger at Bowhill

Thu, Feb 19th 2015 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Weekly club meeting with guest speaker

Members of the Rotary Club were welcomed by the President Sandy Bannerman at last week's meeting when they were treated to an excellent power-point presentation by Rory Powell, Countryside Ranger at Bowhill Estate.  He explained in depth the logistics of the estate and its many varied functions.  Owned by the Duke of Buccleuch it has a wide remit from nature trails, wildlife, heritage, conservation, education with school visits and is linked to Scottish Natural Heritage.  Events are also undertaken including vintage car rallies, duathlons (running and cycling) and, of course, Bowhill House is open to the public.  The Bowhill Theatre is also very popular and several plays are put on each year which are well supported.  Wildlife surveys are of special concern including the recent demise of the red squirrel as well as a programme of studying owls and otters.  There is never a spare or dull moment and Rory's enthusiasm in his talk underlined this.  Many questions were raised after which Past President Billy McWatters, MBE gave the club's vote of thanks.
