How easy is it to turn the study of measurement into a fascinating topic? Well, it was something very capably accomplished by this week's speaker, Andrew Hanson from the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington. Using a replica Ancient Egyptian Royal Cubit as his main prop, he delivered a talk to us with humour and enthusiasm.
He told us about his career at NPL specialising in the measurement of colour, a brief history of the NPL and why accurate measurement is so important to our everyday lives.
Who knew that a Rolls Royce aircraft engine goes through a quarter million measurements before it can be put into service, how accurate do you think an atomic clock can be and why would you refer to the earth as a wobbly egg?
A very interesting and humorous presentation.
