President Peter Mehta welcomed members, together with visitors John Reid, Jan Anderson and the speaker, Robin Iffla, Dean of the Guildry of Stirling. The Acorn Antiques production at the McRobert will take place on March 3rd., not the 1st, as previously reported.
Born in Stirling, Robin is a former police officer and a past board member of Scottish Fire and Rescue. The Guildry of Stirling is the oldest one in Scotland, dating back to the year 1119, so its 900th. anniversary is fast approaching. From these early times till the acts of 1833 and 1848, guild brethren effectively ran the town. After that, power was transferred to the town council. The members were typically prominent tradesmen.
Nowadays, the Guildry strives to maintain some of the ancient traditions, whilst meeting the challenges of the 21st. century. The Guildry Courts are held in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter when new members are admitted, as part of the business of the Court. The Guildry’s base is in Cowane’s Hospital, adjacent to the Church of the Holy Rude.
The Vote of Thanks was given by Ranald Ross-Watt and well supported. This week’s Speakers Host is Robin Sutton, with Visitors Host Mike Queen.
