News Update July 2015
The Rotary year runs from 1st July through to 30th June. It's been an
exceptionally busy month for our club. On July 1st we celebrated our new
year on the hottest day of the year (so far) with the installation of
our new President for 2015-2016 Joan Greening at Batchworth Park Golf
Club. As well as a splendid dinner we entertained ourselves after
dinner with Karaoke - a few great voices amongst us!
Only a few days later our Immediate Past President Mike Udall and his
wife Brenda invited us all round for a barbeque - and the weather stayed
dry!
More seriously, the highest award a Rotary Club can bestow on one of
its members is the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship. Named for our
founder it recognises true "Service Above Self by an individual. We
recognised our member Gillian Pearce for her tireless work in support of
Rotary's international service, most prominently leading a team of
midwives and doctors on a succession of visits to Kamuli Mission
Hospital, Uganda, where she's been helping local midwives to reduce
infant and maternal mortality.
Every year we also recognise our stalwart attenders by presentation of a
shield - this year it was Brendan O'Rourke that picked up the salver -
well done Brendan!!
As if that weren't enough for the month, Tuesday 14th July saw us run
our 20th Annual Golf Day, also at Batchworth Park. 34 teams of 3 took
on the challenge in mostly great weather for golf, with the winners
being Bushey Hall Ramblers, first-time entrants to the event. Of course
the big winner was RNLI to whom we donated the proceeds of the day,
raising more than £9.000
