Rotarian receives award

Retired Magistrate Awarded Paul Harris Fellowship

At Hungerford Rotary Club's 25th Anniversary Dinner, at the Elcot Park Hotel, Berkshire's Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs. Sarah Scrope is seen presenting a Paul Harris Award to Hungerford Rotarian David Howard.  The Paul Harris Fellowship is the highest International Award to be made within Rotary Worldwide and is only given for very exceptional community service making that person stand out from their peers.

In David's case he has served as a Magistrate for 28 years, firstly in Hungerford and Lambourn and then, when these courts closed, in Newbury.  Initially he worked on the criminal side of the Magistrate's Courts but later became a member of the family panel sitting on civil matters regarding domestic disputes and the care of children.  He was a popular magistrate with his colleagues and court staff and known for his dry sense of humour!  A magistrate's work is unpaid and requires constant training to keep up with all the changes in the law all of which is very time consuming.

In addition to his work in the local community he was a Founder Member of the Rotary Club of Hungerford, a Past President and has actively participated in the many Rotary fund raising activities for the benefit of worthy causes locally, nationally and internationally.  His contribution to Rotary and the community exemplifies the ideals of Rotary and its motto "Service above Self" and makes him a worthy recipient of the International Paul Harris Fellowship award.
