KIm Dodd, Youth Development Worker and Assistant Manager at Portishead Youth Centre explained how the Centre had developed, it's current activity and challenges for the future.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary tin 2016, and following a £1m refurbishment programme in 2011, she recounted how in 2012 North Somerset Council withdrew funding from the centre as part of a cost cutting programme and all the staff became redundant. Since then they have worked hard to continue keep the Centre open and deliver services balancing revenues from room hire etc to offset their £180,000 per year costs.
The Youth centre provides an excellent range of facilities for the local community including:
Portishead Youth Centre is not just a centre for youth, it provides facilities for all ages. Services that are delivered through the Centre include:
As Kim explained, the Centre works with the most vulnerable young people in the area. Our Rotary club provides financial support to one particular project based at the centre which helps Young Carers - children who routinely care for a parent or relative living with them.
She also mentioned the continual struggle they have financially to balance the opportunity to hire out their facilities with the need to use the same facilities to deliver the services above. Currently they have a £20,000 per year shortfall in funding and are always looking for help to bridge this gap.
Finally, some comments from the children that use the Centre:
“It’s an easy place to make new friends and I find it fun that they give us the opportunity to help out and work”
“It’s an amazing place to be, the staff are funny and welcoming. The youth centre is a place to go to keep ourselves out of trouble. This place gives us motivation to worker harder and educates us on things we would like to know about”
“It’s my life – everyone here is like a family member to me. This is my second home and I am proud to be a youth club member”
