In 1862 Henry Taylor, great grandfather of Rob Cutts set sail aboard the steamship Robert Lowe bound for British Columbia and the goldfields that were attracting thousands of miners seeking their riches. Also on board this ship were a large group of women heading for British Columbia and the chance to marry one of the men out there. There were a substantial many more men than women in British Columbia and the idea for Bride Ships had found favour in England where there were significantly more women than men at the time.
The ship had to sail down to the south Atlantic calling at the Falklands Islands before rounding Cape Horn and heading for San Francisco. News from here was sent to British Columbia that the ship was on its way and that there were women on board. The women were welcomed with open arms on their arrival and many soon found men to marry.
Rob’s talk about his great grandfather, in which he used technology to great effect, brought to life the history of the time and he read many extracts from Henry’s journal. The voyages Henry made are told in detail in this fascinating book which can be found by entering Henry Taylor’s Journal into Google and following the links.
