Pencils for Africa

Rather than send imperfect pencils to deep landfill, the Derwent Pencil Company in Workington allows Rotary to distribute them to worthy recipients. Here more than 500000 pencils were loaded onto a truck and transported free to the South of England.

The picture shows the pencils safely loaded onto the Cumbria X-Press lorry. Pictured left to right, Penrith Rotarian Peter Dawson, driver George Graham from Penrith, Alex Buchan, Chris Starr and Bob Currie.

Rather than send imperfect pencils to deep landfill, the Derwent Pencil Company in Workington allows Rotary to distribute them to worthy recipients. Here more than 500000 pencils were loaded onto a truck and transported free to the South of England for onward transportation. There are enough pencils for every child in the Gambia and their distribution will be organised by the charity, Building and Assisting Communities with Education (BACE). Chris Starr from Temple Sowerby has connections to the charity and helped to load the pencils.
