EVENING MEETING. Speakers from Rotary SR1.

Tue, Jun 14th 2016 at 6:45 pm - 9:30 pm

Some of the 3 members of SR1 who took part in the cycle ride in Kenya, are coming to give us a talk on their experiences

President Gemma Dishman and secretary Andy Bradley visited to tell us about their Bike Ride across the Maasai Mara.  They had gone there with 5 others as part of a trip led by Gentoo to raise funds for the NURU project.  This provides the local people with solar powered lamps to replace the kerosene lamps that they use to provide light and which create a host of health problems..

Although they only cycled 175 miles in 6 days, it was the most gruelling experience that they had ever had.  The terrain was rough, temperaturs were over 30 degrees and the rickety bikes were regularly breaking down, making it a really challenging journey.  On top of all that, they were sleeping in tents most nights, with only very basic facilites for washing and cooking.

Despite all the difficulties, they all agreed that they would do it again and that it had been an unforgettable, life changing experience.  The seven of them raised over £20,000 and this money will help to change the lives of the local people in the villages through which they travelled.
