Pen Kit + Wood = Slimline Pen

Rotary club of Stirling  meeting of 2nd December 2016

President Alan Rankin welcomed one visitor, Rotarian David Crosbie from the Crieff club. Alan reminded us the there will be NO MEETING on the 23rd and 30th December, and that the next club council will be on 9th January 2017. The club was pleased to hear that both of our candidates, one from St Modans and one from Stirling High, to attend next year's Euroscholar conference , have been accepted. The Arion bus service, taking handicapped youngsters to swimming, is once again up and running.

Our speaker was our webmaster Robin Sutton who spoke not on the Rotary website, a subject which most of us find difficult, but on his hobby wood turning. Robin produces a variety of wooden ornaments, but  has more recently "turned" to the smaller scale but more delicate process of making pens. There are many stages to this, from choosing the wood, always hardwood, precisely boring the central hole into which the pen kit will be fitted, then turning the shape of the pen, and recently burning his logo on each pen using a laser. Each stage requires great precision, and the fact that the instructions for the laser were in Chinese can't have helped. Robin can also make pens in plastic producing a very attractive effect.

Next meeting 9th December, Speaker's host Tom Thomson, Visitor's host Jim Cooper. For more info www.stirling.rotary1010.org
