District Rotary Peace Officer

.

RotaryConfereces are inspirational. The RotaryDistrict1260Conference held in Scarborough in 2011,  inspired today's speaker. It was on that occasion that BrendaLowe , the RotaryPeaceOfficer for  District1260 , heard an inspirational presentation by JeremyGilley , on the subject  PeaceOneDay. The latter's enthusiastic lobbying resulted in the UN declaring September the 21st  #InternationalDayofPeace. This may just sound like a 'raising of awareness' campaign, but it does have tangible results. In the course of  one day on the 21st September 2007, in Afghanistan, when the warring parties, including the Taliban, agreed a ceasefire, 1.4 million children were vaccinated against Polio.

Rotary's great goal is to eradicate Polio, but, as Brenda points out, there are other goals which drive Rotary,  such as: providing clean water, supporting education and saving mothers and children. None of these however can be achieved without Peace. Promoting peace therefore is of paramount importance and RotaryPeaceScholars which our Clubs sponsor, make their mark on the world.
