President's Weekend Tewkesbury 2017
The President's Weekend is a very popular date in our Rotary calendar, allowing us to have fun whilst visiting places we may not have been before.
On Friday night there was the usual frivolity and fun in a very crowded bar, with some of us perched on stools at the end of a table. This showed how popular the Royal Hop Pole. it must be a very thriving establishment for Wetherspoons and its shareholders, such as Steve, who is sure to be one!
On Saturday morning put in our breakfast orders and the food came out y quickly, with no complaints
Suitably refreshed, we headed to Toddington for "Wartime in the Cotswolds" and took a nostalgic steam train journey to Cheltenham. The stations along the way were appropriately decked out in 1940s style with singers, jazz bands, dancing, etc.
Club members joined in with President John and Linda looking great, the former in a uniform of a Senior NCO (rather thick for the warm weather) and the latter resplendent in dress, fur jacket, hat and seamed nylons! Naturally, Steve and Chris were impeccably turned out in uniform, not just for the train trip, but also for evening dinner.
For this we had a Private Rom, which had been decorated with Union Jacks and war time memorabilia, etc and enjoyed a wartime themed menu with tomato soup, lamb shank and apple crumble. The evening finished with music and several of our ladies danced the night away to 1960s music provided Lyn Smith.
This and indeed the whole event, proved to be a first for the Hotel, which had not hosted private parties before, but gave them the confidence to do so in the future.
What could be better than a weekend away in a good hotel with friends and good food and entertainment thrown in.
