President Stewart Wilson welcomed members to our meeting. Unfortunately
the weather had prevented some members including our speaker from
coming, so numbers were small. Colin Bayes reported another win in the
Gavel, on this occasion against Perth St Johns. We plan to hold our
AM/AM at Stirling on 25/5/18.
In the absence of a speaker, President Stewart asked if any of the
members had anything to say. A succession of mainly good jokes followed,
some better than others! More substantial fare was provided by another
member giving his account of developing a heart attack some years ago
when half way up Buachalille Etive Beag. This was very unexpected as he
was very fit, a regular hill walker, however he felt ill and looked ill,
so one of the party set off up the hill to try to get a phone signal,
and another went down to seek help. Looking down he could see the
mountain rescue team arriving, and in a remarkably short time they
reached him, opened his shirt, dry shaved his chest, and applied the
electrodes. He had indeed had a heart attack, and a helicopter was
summoned to take him to hospital. Being winched off the mountain was
alarming given the strong down draught from the blades and he was very
glad to be pulled safely into the cabin of the helicopter. By this time
he was feeling a little better and was able to enjoy the wonderful views
of Glen Coe and the Mamores on the way to Fort William. There was a
further moment of alarm during his admission when a nurse was about to
cut off his new and very expensive gaiters. Fortunately, he was able to
show her has to take them off. Remarkably he told the story in a light
and amusing way, fortunately the outcome has been good.
Next week 26th Jan Alex Galloway will give his delayed talk. Speaker's
host Bill Bryce.
