Rotarians gather to meet new District Governor

Rotarians from Harrogate and Knaresborough gathered at the Crown Hotel recently to meet the new District Governor for North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Humberside and North Lincolnshire. Robert Morphet joined Bradford West Rotary Club in 1986, at the age of 22, and has twice been Club President as well as serving terms as Club Secretary and also as Club Treasurer. Now, aged 53, he is responsible for 103 Rotary Clubs and over 3,000 Rotarians in the District and two weeks into the role he is thoroughly enjoying himself. He has already taken part in two Dragon boat races and a ‘Soapbox Derby’, having earlier in the year run the Edinburgh marathon raising some £26,259 for Rotary’s End Polio campaign.

Robert reassured members that as a Funeral Director he did not join Rotary because he was looking for customers! In an inspiring and amusing speech Robert urged everyone to work hard to recruit new members to Rotary. “The work that Rotary does both locally and in the wider world”, he said, “is too important to allow Rotary to disappear from the scene. We must recruit new members to ensure its work continues”. Robert quoted the End Polio campaign as a magnificent example of what Rotary does.
