A report on a visit to La Boiselle the clean and restore the bench
During the month of June, Past Presidents Murdo and Leslie visited the Lochnager Crater ,La Boiselle ,France to clean and restore the bench. The bench( to commemorrate the Grimsby Chums) had been installed by Grimsby Rotary Club.
The Lochnager Crater is a mine crater and the mine was detonated on the 1st July 1916 on the first day of the Somme battle.Unfotunately it was just short of the German trenches.
The bench was placed on the lip of the crater where some of the Grimsby Chums reached on that day.The club was instrumental (through Murdo ) in collecting money to fund and install the bench in the year 1999.
There was a ceremony for its opening on the 1st July, after the annual commemorative service.
Murdo has been many time alone or with others to clean and restore the bench. This year he took Leslie.
The crater is owned by an Englishman and is now on the tourist trail for 1st World War battle sites.
Well done Murdo and Leslie.
