Visit to Trimontium Museum at Melrose

Visit to the Roman Museum is followed by a meal at Ship Inn in Melrose

On 5th October Hawick Rotarians visited The Trimontium Museum in Melrose where we were given a talk by Rob Longworth on the work of the Trimontium Trust. Rob spoke to us about how 'field walking' played an important part in archaeology with regard to finds etc.. This means just what it says and is best carried out after a field has been ploughed, harrowed and rained upon. Rob also gave us the opportunity to see at close hand some objects found at the Trimontium Fort site by the Trust’s field walkers. The Roman objects Rob showed and explained included examples of clay work (roof, wall and floor tiles), coins, glass beads, brooches and a ring. We were given the opportunity to ask questions, after which we went through to visit the Museum itself which we all found very interesting and informative. We very much appreciated the courtesy shown by Rob and the Trimontium Trust for what was a very enjoyable afternoon.

That evening, Rob and several colleagues attended the Thistle Awards ceremony at Dumfries where they were awarded Best Visitor Attraction in the South of Scotland.

The Rotarians however crossed the street in Melrose to enjoy an excellent meal at the Ship Inn.
