Judy Tyler: Andy's Man Club

Thu, Dec 7th 2023 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Guest speaker will tell us of Andy's man's Club which focuses on the mental health of men.

At the meeting on Thursday there was a talk by Kenny Armour about the work of Andy’sManClub, a charity set up to help men of all ages struggling with depression, anxiety and loneliness. Kenny, based in Kirkcaldy, is a Project Development Champion with the charity.

The organisation started in 2016, following the suicide of a young man, Andy, and has grown and spread nationwide now having around 4,000 members. The prevalence of suicides on a daily basis was highlighted as something which needed addressing and of which many people were not aware.
In Scotland, there are 36 venues and they hope to increase their presence in the Borders where Galashiels is at present the nearest. Meetings take place on a Monday evening and are open to all on a drop-in basis. Occasionally this includes men who have been recommended by NHS. As well as somewhere safe to talk, a hot drink and biscuits to share, Kenny was keen to emphasise that it was normally confidential but referrals might be made if they felt it was necessary. Often those who have sought help go on to be volunteers running groups, and as Kenny pointed out, still benefit from the chance to talk and share their worries.
There was a lively discussion to end the evening and members were very supportive of the work being done by the charity.
