Queen Elizabeth Foundation: “BUGZI” Project

Last year Ashford Rotary Club joined with the Staines Rotary Club in raising money for a BUGZI wheel chair.

During last year Ashford Rotary Club joined with the Staines Rotary Club in raising money for a BUGZI wheel chair. This is a wonderful piece of equipment which allows a child, for example with cerebral palsy to join in with other children. To be able to play with other children, converse with other children to be part of a nursery class and interact with other children, to not be isolated and be alone and most important not made to feel different.

These items are made by the Technical Department at QEF and are made to be specific for a particular child. The child can use the “BUGZI” until as they grow they become too big. The joy of this equipment is that after this time it can be overhauled, serviced and recycled for the use of another child.

Each “BUGZI” costs £5000, in our joint project with Staines between us we raised £2,500 and with the help of a Rotary District Grant which matched our money, we achieved the final amount. We have recently been advised that this “BUGZI” has been given to a local child. We understand that the parents are delighted with the difference it has made to their little girl’s life. She is shooting around every-where making much use of her new found mobility and all the gizmo’s on the equipment.

We at Ashford Rotary are currently fund raising to supply another  “BUGZI” as this is such a worthwhile investment to improve a child’s life.
