Young Carer 2024

Our Rotary Club sponsors the Indie Young Carer Award

We were delighted to again sponsor the Young Carer Award at the #Indies Awards, held on Friday 26th January at BS Rugby Club.  The award went to 15 year old James Windridge, a student at Hockerill Anglo European College, who was recognised for the care he gives to his brother, Toby, who is 2 years younger and suffers from Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects the nervous system and causes severe physical and learning disabilities.  Toby attends Amwell View School.  James says he is trying to take on the lifting and carrying of  his brother, which becomes more difficult as Toby gets older and heavier, to make things easier for his parents.  He tries to make sure he has a relatively normal childhood, with access to modern stuff.  He had been nominated by the boys’ mother Helen, who said James doesn’t only help Toby with physical things, but provides friendship and fun for his little brother, who shares with James a love of Marvel films.  We are proud to have enabled James to have recognition of what he does to help his brother.

The photos show James with his mother, Helen. Club President Bernie Cotton presenting James with his award, and a shot from the accompanying video, showing James with Toby.
