“In The Jungle” was the theme of the 2015 Millicent Kaye Art Competition for Primary-aged children in Years 5 and 6 from the Oswestry area. 8 schools took part this year: Packwood Haugh, Trefonen C.E. Primary School, West Felton C.E. Primary School, Moreton First, Our Lady and St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School, the Meadows County Primary School, Holy Trinity C.E. Primary School and Kinnerley C.E. Primary School producing a staggering 234 2-dimensional entries and 25 3-dimensional entries!
Charlotte Jackson, Arts Co-ordinator at the Qube has worked tirelessly with Rotarian Peter Hill and his Vocational Committee to get the winning entries, all 33 which either were judged to be in the top 3 entries in their class, or highly commended, mounted, framed and hung. The First Prize in the 2-dimensional category went to Orlando Bayliss from Packwood Haugh and First Prize in the 3-dimensional art category went to Grace Thompson from Moreton First with the school which was considered to have made the most effort and contributed most to the competition being Trefonen C.E. Primary School.
So Trefonen will have the special privilege of keeping the Millicent Kaye Trophy in their school for a year; it is a painting of a young girl painted by Millicent Kaye herself, a local artist who died in 1996 and whose legacy lives on through the competition which bears her name.
Before the prize-giving President Mike Griffiths thanked all the entrants for their splendid efforts and spoke of his son, now a film editor for Disney, whose favourite subject at school was, needless to say, art! “Keep up the good work because you never know where it will lead” he said before handing over to Rotarian Peter Hill to present the prizes.
After the prize-giving Peter thanked Charlotte Jackson from the Qube as well as our judge, Joan Turner, herself a local artist, who had set the theme for the competition. Joan said “it is difficult to come up with new themes and also to choose winners from such a strong field of entries, but I really enjoy it!”
The exhibition of the children’s work will be at the Qube until Monday 29th June so we hope as many people as possible will go to view it.
