... Know your Blood Pressure Day

Stroke and Health Awareness

2013 will see the 10th year of over 400 Rotary clubs providing service to their local communities in the arrangement of a Know Your Blood Pressure event (previously known as Stroke Awareness Day).

Of those tested more than 20% were are advised to consult their GP and a significant number are urged to seek immediate medical attention.

It's fair to say that over the years, this event has prevented thousands of people suffering the sometimes fatal and often disabling consequences of a stroke.

"Know Your Blood Pressure Day" is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to help people better understand the relationship between high blood pressure and strokes. It is estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered in the U.K each year could be prevented if only they knew they had high blood pressure and took action to control it and the action they should take to control it.

Rotary clubs run their events in church halls, super- markets, shopping centres, libraries and leisure centres. Recruiting a small team of health professionals, perhaps a GP or practice nurse, early on to take people's blood pressure, together with some local publicity are some of the keys to success.

District 1100 Clubs who have already participated report excellent results in increased public awareness of strokes and Rotary in general.

Clubs wishing to take part in the event should visit the Stroke Association's website for general information. A sample registration form is attached, see below.

Recent changes ensure that Rotary Clubs are fully covered by insurance, provided they comply with the simple requirements outlined by the Stroke Awareness organisation. Make sure you comply!!

Many clubs have old-brand materials from running these days in the past and for 2013 onwards it is essential that new-brand materials produced by the Stroke Association are used to ensure that the correct information is given out along with the latest statistics and advice.

An amnesty of materials for 2013 was therefor offered and clubs who have pre 2013 versions are encouraged to recycle them and we will replace these free of postage charges.

If your club has not held a KYBP event before it is a great way to:

  • Give service to your community helping to prevent stroke and save lives;
  • Raise awareness of Rotary and the benefits of membership;
  • Raise awareness of the Stroke Association as a registered charity reliant upon voluntary donations and, we hope;
  • Appeal for funds.

If you would like to know more or to get involved then please call Rachel, Tara or Terry on 01527 908918 or send them an email.
