CHRISTMAS 2012

Christmas is that wonderful time of the year when we all snuggle together in the cold. It seems to bring out a renewed awareness of our local community as we get ourselves involved with all ages and in all venues, whether in schools or around the late night streets.

First stop, Santa needs our help to distribute presents at the Columbia School Christmas Party. Past President Alan hides behind his usual disguise. The smiles of the children said it all.

Later Kepier Hall buzzed with excitement as we invited the Senior Citizens of Houghton to our annual Christmas Party and Concert. Bernard was in charge and created a colourful theme that was part Christmas and part Queen's Jubilee.

The entertainment was provided by the Houghton Area Youth Band conducted by Brian Adams combining Christmas Carol singalongs with the atmosphere of the last night at the Proms.

And everyone enjoyed themselves.

One night we were back with Santa, this time on his sleigh as he toured the streets of Great Lumley. The sounds of popular Christmas songs announced our coming. Children and parents stood in every doorway and the braver ones stood in the cold at the gate. As usual we were helped by the local Scouts and shared the collection with them.

Another regular link with the Community is the Carol Service at Burnmoor Parish Church. The Presidents of our Rotary Club and our branch of The Inner Wheel both give one of the readings. After the service we provide a hot punch and mince pie party for the parisheners which is always very popular.

Finally it was time for the Club and our many friends to join together for a social evening of our own. This year it was in the Moorings Hotel at Pelton Fell. A night of friendship, lovely food and drink, and an intriguing quiz based on film titles arranged by Bernard.
