INTERACT- My grateful thanks to Steve Wallbank for updating the latest information on our Interact Clubs. It is noticeable that we are not supporting our Interact Clubs in some instances and they are slowly declining and need little help from us. Two thriving Interact Clubs which were looked after by the late Thurrock Gateway Club seem to have declined, unless a Rotary Club knows the latest. One Club is in Grays and one close to Basildon. If a club is willing to visit and resurrect the clubs please contact Steve.
ROTAKIDS- Bryan Davenport (Heybridge Blackwater)is our RotaKids Coordinator, he hopes to arrange a RotaKids Conference later on this Rotary Year, liaising with the Head Teacher, Mike Walsh, from St Mary’s Academy, Kelvedon. He reminds Rotary Clubs that we should, like Interact, keep in touch with schools with RotaKids Clubs especially when some move to Secondary Schools. He presents outgoing Presidents of RotaKids Clubs with a Past President badge and visits the Secondary School with a view to starting an Interact Club – A Pathway to Citizenship.
RYLA - Please note that our District is the first to run an ILM Certificate Course for RYLA participants. Phil Grigg has forwarded a full report on this to all Club secretaries so please read and note. I feel this enhances the Rotary Award and I wish it all success.
YOUNG MUSICIAN – After several meetings, the hosting of this Rotary Year’s Young Musician will be our responsibility. We were the first District to run the competition so we have the expertise. It is looking that the final will be held at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford on Saturday 4th MAY 2019.
YOUNG CHEF – Although we await a date, the Regional Final Final will be hosted by District 1240.(see dates below as update)
YOUNG ARTIST – Unfortunately, Anita Davey from Dunmow Club will no longer be running this competition which is purely a District 1240 competition but I am looking for a coordinator.
IT AND BIG BANG (YOUNG TECHNICIAN) - This is an ever growing competition and we need a coordinator please. I have been informed a Rotarian from 1260 will train us in how to run this exciting competition but need one or two volunteers, please. UPDATE – I am speaking to a potential organiser so please ‘watch this space.
UNDER 12 FOOTBALL - To be a RIBI supported competition, there needs to be a 50% plus District support. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been reached yet and is funded by a District in the Midlands. It may cease to continue but I have written to Home Committee to see if it can continue. We have provided a team supported by the South Woodham Ferrers Club for the last two years and I thank them. Should we have our own District Competition? Let me know.
YOUTH EXCHANGE/ NEW GENERATION SERVICE EXCHANGE I have been pushing these excellent projects for many years. Please spread the word to our young people. All applicants need do is apply on line to youthexchange.org.uk and the rest is simple. I receive the report and contact the local Rotary Club and request support (not money). NGSE is for over 18 wishing to spend a short period in another country on humanitarian aid or vocational knowledge. Really good for a Gap Year or once leaving University or School.
YOUTH SPEAKS – After feedback via the Youth Service National Survey it is apparent that there will be a Youth Debating Competition to replace Youth Speaks but more when I receive further information. It is suggested that is what Schools now require.
YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER – Theme this year is ‘THE BEAUTY OF NATURE’.
YOUNG WRITER – Theme this year, ‘MY INSPIRATION’.
YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER & YOUNG WRITER – Closing dates TO BE WITH National Coordinator are 6th April 2019.
YOUNG CITIZEN /DISTRICT YOUNG ACHIEVER I say this every year that we must have many young people who should be entered for the National Young Citizen Competition where entries are required (copy of entry to me) before end of January 2019. All of those entering who are not selected for Final at Nottingham will be entered into District 1240 Young Achiever where there is a trophy and cash prize.
