2008/9 programme well on track

As we enter the second half of this Rotary year it is fair to say that we are well on track as a Club to delivering the whole of the planned Vocational programme for 2008/9 with some bonus extras thrown in!

Literacy has been a major focus this year in terms of getting new schemes off the ground locally. A consignment of Usborne dictionaries perfect for year 6 schoolchildren (that's last year of primary school in old money!) has been ordered for distribution next Autumn as prizes in a new essay competition for those schools who participate in our Lifeline project. Furthermore, in conjunction with Oswestry Library, a new "Read It, Write It" book review competition is about to be launched on World Book Day (5th March) for both primary and secondary schoolchildren.

The Rotary Mock Interview Experience has been taken to The Marches again this year with 112 interviews scheduled over 7 Mondays for Year 11 students. The first 4 sessions had a turn-out rate of over 95% with 61 students each having 15 minutes interview and 15 minutes instant feedback together with a hand-out containing helpful hints for one of life's important challenges ahead.

Our annual Investment Competition is nearly half way through its 6 months' duration and at the first interim valuation a team from Oswestry School was heading the field and, amazingly in these turbulent times on the stock market, showing a healthy profit. A record number of 5 schools and colleges are participating this year with a record number of teams entered.

Club members had a most interesting 2 hours on a trip to BT Whittington House last month to add to the vineyard trip last September.

Which leaves just "Youth Speaks" from the planned programme to come on stream, all being well, after a recce to the District final in Mold on Friday by 2 members of Vocational Service Committee.
