Christmas Tree Shake and Chip

The Rotary Club of Bishop Auckland held their usual collection at the Newgate Centre, Bishop Auckland on December 21st, 22nd and 24th

The generosity of the people of Bishop Auckland was greatly appreciated as £1,212.91 was raised shared between the Butterwick Hospice, The Great North Air Ambulance and the Rotary’s Charity Account.

This years tree was again kindly donated by B&Q of Bishop Auckland  and additional decorations were provided by ALDI suppling us with £20 of gift vouchers for use in their store to purchase decorations

On Jan 5th, the Rotary Clubs of Bishop Auckland and Crook, in conjunction with Butterwick Hospice, carried out house collections of Christmas trees for recycling. A minimum donation of £5 was requested. This was the fifth year of collecting, the number of trees reached 68 and the total amount collected was £400 for Butterwick Hospice

The rotary clubs would like to thank all those who donated and also give special thanks to GW Holmes and Harbro  Supplies for the loan of vans, to Matthew Allinson of All Seasons Arborists for shredding the trees at Woodhouse Lane. Using his well named "Bandit Intimidator", Matthew took less than 20 minutes to chip 68 trees and leave a neat pile of wood chippings that can be used to cover pathways in the allotments

The money raised by these two events has been shared between the Butterwick Hospice, The Great North Air Ambulance and the Rotary’s Charity Account.

New Year's Day Dip at Whitley Bay

Rotarian John Yeomans did his Annual New Year's Day Dip at Whitley Bay with 9 members of his family aged 7 to 75. He reported that it was a wonderful blue sky but the tide was right up to the promenade and the sea was very rough. Those factors coupled with a record crowd of dippers , swimmers and spectators made for difficult swimming but our group of 9 succeeded in completing the task. A total of £1200 was raised by the group and this money will be sent to the "Jog4Georgie" Lung Cancer Research Trust Fund at the University of York Medical School.
