Pickering Rotary Club At The Heart Of The Community
Pickering Rotary Club have funded the provision of a defibrillator at Eastgate car park in Pickering. The installation was instigated by retired doctor and Rotarian David Capes.
You may ask “What is a defibrillator”?
Defibrillators are life saving devices that can restart the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest and can be used by untrained members of the public. Increasingly defibrillators are being installed in busy public places so that in the event of an emergency, the ambulance service can direct a caller to a nearby device.
A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it's an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. You don’t need to be trained to use a defibrillator – anyone can use it. There are clear instructions on how to attach the defibrillator pads. It then assesses the heart rhythm and will only instruct you to deliver a shock if it’s needed.
Anyone who needs to access the defibrillator in an emergency calls 999, and the operator will give them a key code to open the box.
Sue Harris President of Pickering Rotary Club said “ I am delighted that Rotary has funded this vital piece of life saving equipment which will benefit the local community as well as the many visitors to Pickering”.
Rosy Smith the Ryedale District Council Building Surveyor said ” the liaison between Pickering Rotary Club, and the Councils Community Team has worked extremely well. We hope to see more similar joint ventures.”
