Club visit to HS2

A visit to the South Portal

Putting aside political considerations, anyone with an interest in engineering , would be amazed of the size and scope of the HS2 project. 12 members of the Rotary Club of Amersham visited The Chiltern Tunnel South Portal and were given a close view of this extensive site. Apart from being the southern entrance, the area includes two factories, making precast tunnel sections, which are continuously being introduced inside the tunnel by the Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named Florence and Celia, and precast viaduct sections. Lengths of erected viaduct were then seen by the Rickmansworth Waterskiing Club. The HS2 (Align) guides, Freda and Ciara, gave a clear and detailed explanation of the project, the site and the complexity of the task.
