The speaker was Club
member and former President Jimmy MacGregor with a talk illustrated by
photos entitled 'A second childhood’. He looked back to his youth, ‘a
different age’, when as a member of the Scouts he had walked, climbed
mountains, camped. He has continued to do this over the years and, in
2010, set up a group of like-minded fellow Rotarians who walk, visiting
places of historical interest en route, climb (not so steeply now as
they once did!) and enjoy the social aspect of being together. Jimmy is
Honorary Secretary of the group, a ‘constant’ presence. Over the years
the group have walked together, climbed together, socialised together
in, among other places, Torridon, Raasay (on ‘Callum’s Road’), Ghia and
Knoydart (both of which underwent a community buy-out), the Pentlands
and the Cairngorms, Dunkeld, St Abbs, Coll, Jock’s Road from Braemar to
Glen Clova, and recently to Rutland to visit a former member of the
group now living there. A highlight came in 2013 when Jimmy, then Rotary
President of this Club, walked the Rob Roy Walk (which runs between
Drymen and Pitlochry) raising £2,500 for charity. This entertaining talk
was well received by the members present. Gordon Wowk gave the vote of
thanks.
