Autumn arrives and brings with it the annual pilgrimage of certain Rotarian golfers to Okehampton for 3 days or so of almost non-stop golf, accompanied by copious amounts of ale and never-ending snooker games! Let’s say this year the
weather in Devon was “mixed”… ranging from dry/cloudy most days to
downright soggy on the Tuesday, when constant drizzle and cool breezes
(and advancing years!) resulted in a unanimous decision to abandon the
morning’s play and return to base for a hot shower, change of clothes
…and a beer!
“Sandy” Wilson’s birthday (really, that old?!) was
celebrated that evening with, I believe, a number of spirit beverages, though most of the fellas seemed to lean towards the local Atlantic amber brew,
which arrived in four pint jugs.
This year our eleven members were
joined by Newent Rotarian Tony Tee, and a welcome addition he was…with his peculiar putting technique closely resembling one of our own golfer’s unique style…now who could that be?!
For the record the “Par 3 Course” Winner was “Bulldog” Barnes, the “ParBaa” (nodding sheep) Winner “Arnie” Paterson, the “KigBear”
Trophy Winner “Angel” Dawson (and what a wonderful hand carved Trophy
this is, compliments of “Padraig” Odell…is there no end to this man’s
talents (apart from golf?), with the overall Champ being “Angel” Dawson,
followed by “Arnie” Paterson” and “Rory” Threlfall.
As always a good time had by all, with next year’s date already booked and in the diary. Big thanks to Jeff Dawson for organising it all, and to “Kittyman” Bob for keeping us well oiled!
